Why won't a new mod install over the old version?
Android normally allows an app to update in place only when the new APK has the same package name and a signing certificate that Android accepts for the installed app. If the signing key does not match, Android blocks the update, even when the app name looks identical.
Mod APKs can be signed by different people. A new mod release may come from a different uploader or modder than the old release, and each may sign the APK with a different key. This can happen even if both files came from HappyMod, because mods on the platform are uploaded by users. It can also happen when the old version was downloaded from another source.
As a result, downloading a newer version does not always mean it can be installed over the version already on your phone. A signature conflict is one common reason an update fails, although package-name, Android-version, or APK compatibility issues can also prevent installation.
Back up game progress before reinstalling
Uninstalling an app usually removes its locally stored data. Before removing the old version, check whether your game can sync progress to an account or export a save file. Do not uninstall until you have confirmed a backup method is available and, where possible, that the latest progress has synced.
- Check the game's own account or cloud-save settings. Sign in to the same account you plan to use after reinstalling, enable cloud sync if the game offers it, and wait for the game to confirm that syncing is complete. Reopen the game or check its account page to confirm the latest save is present.
- Check Google Play Games or the game's linked service. Some games save progress through Google Play Games, Facebook, or their own account system; others do not. Confirm the game is linked to the correct account and that its progress is visible or synced. Merely signing in to Google Play Games does not guarantee that a particular game backs up saves.
- Use an in-game export or backup option, if available. Follow the game's instructions and store the exported file somewhere you can access after reinstalling. Keep a second copy if the progress matters.
- Review Android device backup, but don't rely on it alone. Android or Google One backup may include app data for some apps, but support and restore behavior vary by app, device, and Android version. A device backup is not proof that this game's save can be restored to a differently signed mod.
- Keep the old installation until the backup is verified. If the game has no account sync or export option and you cannot confirm that its data is backed up, do not uninstall yet. Contact the game's support or check its official backup instructions first.
How to install the new version
If the old version came from outside HappyMod
If the old APK came from another website or app store, its signing key is likely to differ from the HappyMod mod. After backing up and verifying your game progress, uninstall the old app, install the new mod, then sign in to the same game account or use the game's restore option. Your progress may return if the game supports a compatible cloud save, but restoration is not guaranteed.
If both versions came from HappyMod
Compare the old and new entries' mod information, such as the mod type and description. If those details match, the releases may be from the same modder and an in-place update may be more likely to work. However, matching mod information does not prove that the APKs use the same signing key, so it cannot guarantee an update.
Sometimes a newer version of the same mod takes time to appear. If HappyMod shows a new release with different mod information, it may have been uploaded or signed by someone else. To switch to it, first secure your game progress, uninstall the old version, install the new one, and then try the game's supported restore or account-sync process.
If Android still refuses an in-place update, do not repeatedly install over the old app. Confirm your backup first; then uninstall the old version and install the new APK. Uninstalling without a verified backup can permanently erase local progress.
In short
A mod update can fail because the new APK was signed with a different key from the installed version. Comparing mod information can help you judge whether two releases may be related, but only a compatible signature allows Android to update an installation in place. If you need to uninstall, verify a game-supported backup first, since not every game's progress can be restored.
